Legato, Staccato and Non-Legato

During the piano learning process, selected musical piece can be practised three times, using three different touches from Legato, Staccato, to Non-Legato, to enhance the learning of articulation.

Legoto –

  • Some beginners usually play legato naturally. To play legato, students must be able to hear the difference between continuous and non-continuous sounds.
  • Piano teacher can play short motives, both legato and non-legato, asking students to identify which are smooth and connected, and which are not. Once students know how to differentiate, they can feel the physical emotions needed to produce a legato sound.
  • Legato playing achieved as a physical concept produces a superficially connected sound.

Staccato –

  • Staccato touch adds variety, energy and excitement to playing.
  • Like Legato, students must hear the sound and feel the correct motion to achieve staccato.
  • It is easier to play correctly using a whole-arm motion. Bouncing is an excellent image for the motion and sound of staccato.

Non-Legato –

  • The easiest touch for many beginners.
  • A small space of silence separates each note and the fingers do not have to connect one note to the next.
  • The hand, arm and finger simply move up and down.
